With my latest spoken word album, my aim is to take you on an unforgettable journey to the intersection of faith and Black history. Through the tracks of this album, explore the spiritual influences that inspired Black history’s key creative moments – from the haunting slave spirituals of the old south, to the juke joints of the Harlem Renaissance, and the coffee houses of the Black Arts movement. Black history is excavated and its heroes are celebrated – from Harriet Tubman to Martin Luther King, from Mahalia Jackson to my own paternal ancestor – who escaped slavery via the underground railroad. With music by acclaimed composer and hip-hip producer, Evren Oz, The Good Word is my most personal work to date. It is an unflinching testament to the generational influence of ancestry and faith – infused with bluesy rhythm, soulful jazz and gospel undertones. This album is spoken word soul food, with a powerful message of history, love, faith and the enduring spirit that is the backbone of what it means to be Black in North America. Find it now on Bandcamp: andreathompsonpoet, or on all major streaming sites under: Andrea C. Thompson.

INVESTIGATING THE INTERSECTION OF BLACK HISTORY & FAITH

"Thompson said that through her research, she found out that faith, whether it be Christian or not, was not just important for civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr, but that Christianity also had deep ties to Africa in antiquity. It made her realize that the connection between white supremacy and theology of Christianity is propaganda. “[The] coupling of white supremacy and Christianity is mythological,” Thompson said. “I had a lot of assumptions about what Christianity is… [but] it has been a cornerstone of the Black community… [and that deconstruction] is hopefully what I’m trying to do.” Chatting with Marta Anielska about poetry, history and spirituality.
